Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) has moved to exclude parliamentarians who voted in favor of a censure motion against the government. PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu stated that those who fail to attend a meeting or vote against party lines will no longer be considered part of the PSD team. This action follows similar internal decisions by the National Liberal Party (PNL), though the PNL’s decisions regarding voting on the Veștea government were temporarily suspended by the Ilfov Tribunal. The court issued an emergency ruling in the PNL case, despite such internal party expulsions being a common practice in Romanian politics. The rulings concern the exclusion of PNL members who vote for or against the current government. While not unique to either party, the PNL case received expedited judicial review. The situation highlights internal party discipline measures being employed amidst political maneuvering.
