The head of Romania’s National Audiovisual Council (CNA) expressed serious concerns about the potential for disinformation to undermine the 2028 elections. In an interview, interim president Valentin Jucan stated the current penalties for spreading disinformation – capped at 200,000 lei (approximately $40,000 USD) – are too low and have become a mere “subscription cost” for broadcasters. Jucan further indicated some television channels are actively contributing to the spread of online disinformation. He warned the CNA lacks the resources and authority to effectively combat the growing threat. Jucan implied the situation is already damaging the information landscape and foreshadows difficulties in ensuring fair elections. He believes the current framework is insufficient to address the scale of the problem.
