Ilie Bolojan, a leading figure within Romania’s National Liberal Party (PNL), has announced his opposition to supporting the proposed Veștea government. Bolojan is advocating for a minority government focused on securing and effectively utilizing funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), Romania’s post-pandemic recovery strategy funded by the European Union. He has instructed PNL parliamentarians to abstain from the vote of investiture for the Veștea cabinet. Instead, Bolojan proposes a “national pact” – a transparent political agreement – to underpin a minority government’s stability and ensure responsible PNRR implementation. This move signals a significant internal division within the PNL regarding the country’s future governing structure. The proposal aims to prioritize the efficient allocation of EU funds over immediate political alliances. Bolojan’s stance challenges the current political landscape and introduces a new condition for governmental support.
