The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) announced Wednesday it will not support the proposed government led by designated Prime Minister Adrian Veștea. UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor stated his party’s representatives will abstain from the parliamentary vote of confidence. This decision effectively jeopardizes Veștea’s chances of forming a governing majority. The announcement follows meetings between the National Liberal Party (PNL) President and leaders from both UDMR and the Save Romania Union (USR). Veștea was given a deadline to secure parliamentary backing, which now appears unlikely given the UDMR’s withdrawal. Hunor described his discussion with the PNL President as a “one-on-one conversation,” suggesting direct negotiation attempts failed to yield an agreement. The potential collapse of the current coalition raises questions about Romania’s political stability.
