Romania is facing a potential energy collapse due to a severe drought impacting both nuclear and hydroelectric power generation. The country has urged citizens to conserve electricity as water levels plummet. To address the cooling needs of Romania’s sole nuclear power plant, the army was deployed to blast rocks in a Danube side channel. This action aims to expose more water for cooling purposes, as the drought initially revealed the rock formation. The lack of rainfall has critically reduced the effectiveness of hydroelectric power, further exacerbating the energy shortfall. Authorities are hoping the exposed water will provide a temporary solution to prevent a wider energy crisis.
