Romania has become the first European Union member state to financially compensate aquaculture and fishing farms for carbon sequestration. The initiative, dubbed "Environmental Services" (Action 2.1.4), allocates a budget of €14.285 million. Approximately 300 farms are expected to benefit from the scheme, potentially receiving up to €50,000 annually. The program rewards environmentally conscious practices within the aquaculture sector. This pioneering move encourages sustainable aquaculture and acknowledges its role in carbon capture. The technical concept for the scheme was developed through collaboration with relevant experts. This positions Romania as a leader in integrating environmental considerations into agricultural policy.
