A rare late Roman stone sarcophagus has been discovered in Cavtat, Croatia, a town built upon the foundations of the ancient Greek city of Epidaurum. The find occurred during protective archaeological excavations at the Zorina 8 site. The Museums and Galleries of Konavle conducted the investigation, uncovering the significant artifact. This discovery provides further insight into the Roman presence and burial practices in the region. Epidaurum was a prominent Greek settlement before becoming integrated into the Roman Empire. The sarcophagus’s condition and details are currently under examination by archaeologists, promising further revelations about the area’s rich past. The finding highlights the historical layers present in this coastal region of Croatia.
