A residential building in Ridderkerk, Netherlands, was evacuated tonight following the detection of high levels of carbon monoxide. This marks the second time this year the building has been cleared due to the dangerous gas, with a previous incident occurring in May. Firefighters responded to an alarm triggered by a carbon monoxide detector around 6:00 PM and confirmed the presence of the gas. Over one hundred residents, many of whom are elderly, were forced to leave their homes and are being temporarily sheltered at a nearby restaurant. One person was checked by paramedics but did not require hospitalization. Authorities are investigating the source of the leak, and the building remains closed while measurements are taken on multiple floors. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be fatal, and between ten and fifteen people die annually in the Netherlands from acute poisoning.
