Celebrated Nepali climber Nirmal Purja has died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, his foundation confirmed on Saturday. The 43-year-old was ascending the 8,047-meter peak when the avalanche struck on Thursday, along with nine other climbers. Purja, famed for his record-breaking ascent of all 14 of the world’s “eight-thousanders” – mountains over 8,000 meters – in just over six months, went missing alongside three other climbers who have now been confirmed dead: an Omani climber, Nadira Al Harthi, and two Nepali climbers, Pur Ba Bahadur Gurung and Sara Mallory Geis. Rescue efforts continue for the remaining six climbers, though chances of survival are dwindling. Officials warn that the Pakistani mountains present different challenges than those in Nepal, with ongoing avalanche risks complicating rescue operations. Purja, a former British Army soldier, was described by fellow climbers as “very brave” and capable of achieving the impossible.
