The remains of Yevhen Konovalets, a Ukrainian nationalist murdered in 1938, have been exhumed from a Rotterdam cemetery and transferred to Kyiv. Konovalets, who founded the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OON) in the 1920s, was assassinated by a Soviet NKVD agent while in exile advocating for Ukrainian independence. President Zelenskyy announced the repatriation of his remains, which will initially be interred at a military cemetery in Kyiv before eventual reburial at a national heroes’ memorial. The assassination involved a bomb hidden inside a box of chocolates, detonated while Konovalets was walking in Rotterdam. This act was a targeted killing orchestrated by the Soviet secret service after an agent infiltrated the OON and discovered his location. The exhumation and return of the remains are symbolically significant for Ukraine amid its current conflict with Russia.
