A 2017 video taken by Libyan photographer Mohammed Almuntasir has provided the first confirmed sighting of sand cats in their natural habitat. This sparked an eight-year research partnership with zoologist Firas Hayder, dedicated to studying the elusive feline. The collaboration leverages Almuntasir's local knowledge and photographic evidence with Hayder’s zoological expertise. Their combined efforts are significantly deepening scientific understanding of sand cat populations within Libya. The findings are crucial for conservation efforts aimed at protecting these rarely seen animals. This discovery highlights the importance of local expertise in wildlife research and preservation. The research continues to yield valuable data about the sand cats' behavior and distribution.
