A Queensland couple, Quentin and Kylie Birt, recently donated $40 million to fight Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The couple stated their substantial gift was not motivated by a desire for philanthropic recognition. Instead, they were deeply moved by the story of former Australian Rules footballer Neale Daniher, who has MND. The Birts were particularly inspired after reading Daniher’s book detailing his battle with the disease. They made the donation at the Big Freeze event, an annual fundraiser for MND research. The couple emphasized their desire to support finding a cure for MND, rather than seeking public praise for their generosity. Their donation represents one of the largest ever received for MND research in Australia.
