A practical, skills-focused track within the HAVO secondary education system in the Netherlands is set to become widely available after a successful pilot program. The Calvijn College in Goes was among 240 schools participating in the three-year Ministry of Education initiative, designed to broaden student talent development and better align education with higher education and the job market. Students in the program choose a focus – technology, healthcare, economics, or education – and combine practical and theoretical learning with a weekly internship. At Calvijn College, practical exam results contribute to overall student grades. One student, Hannah Minderhoud, pursued a stage as a math teacher, inspired by her parents’ careers in education. The program aims to create a clearer distinction between HAVO and VWO (pre-university) education levels, offering a more hands-on learning experience.
