Following reports of a potential infectious disease fatality in Irkutsk, Russia, Mongolian health officials are closely monitoring the situation. The National Center for Zoonotic Diseases (NCZD) in Mongolia reports that the sanitary and epidemiological situation in Irkutsk Oblast, Irkutsk, and Shelekhov remains stable as of yesterday. Medical observation of contacts is nearing completion, with two cases of COVID-19 and two cases of rhinovirus identified through laboratory testing, but no other pathogens detected. Currently, medical observation has been completed for 60% of contacts. The situation is under the surveillance of Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian consumer rights and human wellbeing protection service. Mongolia’s Minister of Health, E. Batshugar, stated the country is assessed as “low risk,” with temperature checks at the border and isolation rooms prepared for potential cases. Preliminary symptoms resemble severe influenza, but samples sent to Russia have not indicated a specific epidemic.
