Polish official Karol Nawrocki has explained the reasoning behind the revocation of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle. The decision stems from Zelenskyy’s honoring of a military unit named after the “Heroes of the UPA,” a controversial group with a history of violence against Poles during World War II. Nawrocki stated that while Poles understand the realities of war and the Russian threat, this particular act crossed a line. He emphasized that the honoring of the UPA unit caused significant offense and pain within Poland. The move highlights ongoing historical tensions between the two countries regarding the wartime actions of Ukrainian nationalist groups. Despite current geopolitical alignment against Russia, historical grievances remain a sensitive issue. The Polish government views the honoring of the UPA as unacceptable and a betrayal of shared values.
