Poland’s Presidential Chancellery confirmed Ukraine did not act on an offer to rename a Ukrainian military unit bearing the name of the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The offer came from Polish President Karol Nawrocki, aiming to address Polish concerns regarding the UPA’s historical actions, particularly its role in the Volhynian Massacre during World War II. Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Chancellery, stated Ukraine chose not to utilize the opportunity to rename the unit. This follows recent statements by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba defending President Zelenskyy’s decision to maintain the naming. The UPA remains a sensitive and contentious issue in Polish-Ukrainian relations due to its involvement in ethnic cleansing during the war. The Polish side views the continued honoring of the UPA as a significant diplomatic issue, while Ukraine defends its historical narrative. This decision is likely to further strain already complex bilateral ties.
