Poland’s Health Minister Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda acknowledged a lack of regulations currently governing doctors’ working hours, stating that national health fund (NFZ) inspectors cannot flag even excessively long shifts as violations. This admission follows recent controversy surrounding working conditions at the Szpital Południowy (Southern Hospital). The Minister announced plans to introduce statutory limits on doctors’ working hours in response to the situation. Sobierańska-Grenda also defended a new law regarding salary transparency for medical professionals. She refuted claims that the law is intended to antagonize doctors, emphasizing its purpose is to increase accountability. The Prime Minister has reportedly not raised concerns regarding the Minister’s handling of the situation or the proposed legislation.
