Poland has finalized a deal to purchase three submarines from Sweden, marking a significant step in modernizing its aging naval fleet. The acquisition aims to enhance security in the Baltic Sea region, as Poland currently operates only one functional submarine dating back to 1986. Deliveries of the new A26 Blekinge-class submarines are expected to begin in 2030, with all three arriving within five years. This purchase follows increasing defense cooperation between Poland and Sweden, including a substantial Swedish business presence within Poland and planned training for Polish sailors in Sweden. Poland allocates a high percentage of its GDP to defense, exceeding most NATO members, and intends to further invest in naval infrastructure upgrades in the coming months. The deal represents Poland’s first acquisition of modern submarines in over three decades, reducing its reliance on outdated Soviet-era technology.
