Poland has rescinded its highest honor, the Order of the White Eagle, from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The decision follows Zelensky’s approval of naming a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a nationalist group accused of killing approximately 100,000 Polish citizens during World War II. Polish President Andrzej Duda condemned the naming decision as unacceptable, prompting the revocation of the award initially presented in 2023 for strengthening Polish-Ukrainian relations. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha criticized the move as a “strategic mistake” and an unnecessary escalation of tensions. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged both presidents to de-escalate the situation, noting it benefits Russia and concerns their allies. The dispute threatens to strain the crucial relationship between Poland and Ukraine, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
