Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure unveiled an extensive plan this week to construct 4,700 kilometers of new railway lines by 2050. The Integrated Rail Network plan prioritizes high-speed rail, with approximately 2,700 kilometers dedicated to these lines, alongside the modernization of 5,600 kilometers of existing tracks. The project aims to significantly enhance Poland’s rail infrastructure and connectivity. Roughly 1,000 kilometers of new lines are slated for completion by 2035. The announcement highlights a growing disparity in rail development between Poland and its neighbor, Slovakia, which has not pursued comparable infrastructure investments. This initiative positions Poland as a regional transportation hub, while raising concerns about Slovakia’s competitiveness. The plan signals a long-term commitment to rail as a key component of Poland’s infrastructure strategy.
