A man in Arequipa, Peru, has been sentenced to four years of suspended imprisonment for stealing 261 voter identification cards during the second round of the recent election. Miguel Tupayachi concealed the electoral materials within a food box. Due to his lack of prior criminal record, the sentence was converted to 208 days of community service. He was also ordered to pay civil damages to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE). The sentencing was delivered swiftly, within 36 hours of the offense being discovered. The incident raises concerns about potential attempts to disrupt the electoral process. Authorities are investigating whether Tupayachi acted alone or as part of a larger effort.
