A personalized cancer vaccine developed by Moderna and Merck has demonstrated success in a late-stage clinical trial for melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. The vaccine is tailored to each patient's unique tumor, stimulating the immune system to specifically target and destroy cancer cells. This breakthrough involves analyzing a patient’s melanoma to identify neoantigens – mutations unique to their cancer – and then creating a vaccine to train the immune system to recognize and attack those neoantigens. Trial results showed a significant reduction in the risk of melanoma recurrence or death among those who received the vaccine in combination with Keytruda, an existing immunotherapy drug.
