Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape has pledged K5 million (approximately $1.4 million USD) in immediate financial assistance to Manus Province. The aid package responds to significant disruptions caused by an unusual undersea volcanic eruption in the Bismarck Sea. Large quantities of volcanic pumice and marine debris have washed ashore, impacting coastal communities across the province. These deposits are hindering sea travel, damaging fishing industries, and threatening food and water security for residents. The volcanic activity is also affecting the daily lives and livelihoods of island communities in Manus. The government’s support aims to address these urgent needs and begin recovery efforts.
