Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan met with United States President Donald Trump during a reception banquet held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York last month. The Press Information Department (PID) released photographs from the White House showing the two leaders shaking hands and smiling, but provided no further details of their conversation. This meeting occurred as Shehbaz addressed the UNGA on September 25th and was publicly acknowledged by President Trump as a “terrific man.” The Pakistani premier also engaged in bilateral talks with other global leaders, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during the UNGA sessions. Pakistan is currently working as a mediator to de-escalate tensions between the US and Iran and the leaders previously met at events concerning the conflict in Gaza and a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. This meeting in New York is one of several recent interactions between the two, including gatherings in Washington, DC.
