Police in Larkana, Pakistan intervened to stop a forced marriage between a 13-year-old girl and her 16-year-old cousin. The intervention followed an alert from a local trust advocating for child protection, who initially attempted community-level intervention before contacting law enforcement. Upon police arrival, the groom and his family fled the scene, while the girl was taken into protective custody at the Women Police Station. Authorities counselled the girl’s parents on the legal marriage age and secured a written commitment not to marry their daughter before she turns 18. The girl was ultimately returned to her parents’ care, as she expressed a desire to remain with them; however, authorities indicated they would have sought court intervention and placement in a shelter if she had refused. A local advocate continues to monitor the situation, expressing ongoing concerns for the girl’s safety and the conditions within protective shelters.
