Pakistan’s Lawyers Action Committee (LAC) has strongly denounced the Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s (JCP) process for appointing high court judges, labeling it as “horse trading” and deeply damaging to the justice system. The committee cited lingering issues from past constitutional amendments as contributing to the current crisis. Veteran lawyer Ali Ahmed Kurd has been nominated to lead a nationwide movement aimed at restoring public faith in the judiciary. Kurd, a key figure in the 2007 lawyers’ movement, stated he accepted the leadership role with reluctance but due to widespread disillusionment with the justice system. The LAC plans to begin public meetings in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and will also engage overseas Pakistanis with a planned event in London. The resolution calls on JCP members to reject what they term a corrupt process and speak out against it, arguing the appointments now resemble political nominations rather than merit-based selections.
