Pakistan has initiated a feasibility study to explore the establishment of strategic petroleum reserves (SPR), contracting international consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie for the task. Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik led a kickoff meeting with Wood Mackenzie representatives, outlining the study's scope and timelines. The move aims to bolster Pakistan’s energy security and reduce vulnerability to global supply disruptions, particularly following recent tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The government views energy security as vital to national security and is actively pursuing related reforms. A key component of this strategy includes a recently approved "world-class bonded scheme" designed to attract international oil companies to establish storage facilities within Pakistan. The study will assess the country’s preparedness for potential supply shocks and identify the optimal approach for building resilience in the energy sector.
