Following a devastating fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) Mother and Child Health Centre that claimed the lives of 14 infants, the federal government of Pakistan has committed to urgently address critical shortages of engineering and technical staff. A meeting, led by Health Minister Mustafa Kamal and attended by officials from the Health Ministry, Pims administration, the Capital Development Authority (CDA), and other departments, focused on the issues exposed by the tragedy. Discussions centered on the disrupted repairs to the HVAC system at the affected center, stalled due to the ongoing investigation. Minister Kamal instructed officials to expedite the handover of the building for restoration and to utilize available engineers from the disbanded Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD). Additionally, the Health Ministry will request engineers and technical staff from the Ministry of Housing and Works to bolster Pims’ capabilities. The Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA) has also commenced a full assessment of the hospital. These measures aim to guarantee safe and continuous healthcare services for patients and newborns at Pims.
