Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb addressed the National Assembly to respond to concerns regarding the proposed FY27 budget and economic data. The address followed Senate recommendations and a privilege motion alleging discrepancies within the budget document, specifically regarding GDP growth, per capita income, and reporting methodology. Aurangzeb asserted that no changes were made to the methodology used for reporting economic indicators and offered to present FY18 data to demonstrate consistency across administrations. He clarified the distinction between real and nominal GDP, explaining that real GDP is adjusted for economic activity changes and calculated using constant prices. The minister also detailed how per capita income is determined based on current prices, gross national income, and population estimates. Aurangzeb reported the country’s nominal GDP increased from $408.2 billion in FY25 to $452.1 billion in FY26.
