The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced its readiness to conduct local government (LG) elections in Punjab and 23 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Despite being prepared, the ECP attributes ongoing delays to repeated, last-minute amendments introduced by both federal and provincial governments. In Punjab, delimitation hearings are complete, with final boundaries expected by August 17, 2026, and the ECP is prepared to announce a schedule immediately after consultation. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has completed delimitation in 23 districts, but amendments to population thresholds for local councils have created a mismatch with the Ninth Schedule, hindering progress. The provincial government requested more time to revise the schedule, which the ECP granted while reiterating its preparedness. The ECP is constitutionally obligated to hold LG elections within 120 days of the expiry of local government terms, and has already completed schedules for Islamabad and other provinces.
