Pakistan’s National Assembly passed the fiscal year 2026-27 budget on Tuesday, despite a walkout by opposition members following criticism of the government. During the session, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s role as a mediator in recent talks between the United States and Iran, held in Switzerland. He expressed optimism that a memorandum of understanding signed by the two nations would lead to a lasting agreement within 60 days, addressing issues including Iran’s nuclear program and frozen assets. Sharif emphasized Pakistan’s sincere efforts to facilitate dialogue and bring the two sides closer together, noting the positive international recognition the country received for its mediation. He also congratulated the nation and all parliamentarians on this “historic” achievement. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected in Pakistan for further discussions on strengthening bilateral relations.
