The government of Pakistan has adjusted fuel prices, increasing petrol by Re0.88 per litre to Rs393.64 and decreasing high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.88 per litre to Rs397.76, effective October 6th. Despite the diesel reduction, substantial taxes and duties remain, at Rs114 per litre for petrol and Rs100 per litre for diesel. These price fluctuations follow peaks earlier in the year—Rs458.41 for petrol and Rs520.35 for HSD on April 3—linked to the US-Iran conflict which began affecting prices from February 28th, when diesel was at Rs281 and petrol at Rs266. In response to rising fuel costs and the ongoing Middle East conflict, the government has implemented new austerity measures, including 9pm market closures and a 50% reduction in fuel allocations for official vehicles for three months. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a relief scheme for owners of smaller vehicles (under 800cc) to mitigate the impact of global oil price increases. Fuel price adjustments are now made daily, a change implemented July 17th, to reflect international market fluctuations.
