Copper concentrate exports have resumed at the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia after a blockade by protestors from the “New Reform Movement.” The group had blocked roads used to transport copper concentrate since approximately 9:00 AM yesterday. Oyu Tolgoi contributes significantly to the Mongolian economy, providing roughly one-third of the nation’s revenue and contributing over 10% of its GDP through direct and indirect economic impact. The mine injects an average of 23 billion Mongolian Togrog into the economy daily. A prolonged disruption to concentrate transport and exports risked substantial tax revenue losses for the state budget – approximately 35 billion Togrog per week, including 21 billion Togrog in Mineral Resource Royalty payments. The resumption of exports avoids potential contractual breaches and associated financial penalties.
