Ostrava Zoo has achieved a significant milestone with the first successful breeding of a Papuan Eclektus parrot. A young pair at the zoo successfully raised a chick, marking a first for the institution. The offspring was immediately identified as male due to the species’ distinct sexual dimorphism – a clear difference in appearance between males and females. Male Papuan Eclektus parrots are predominantly green with bright orange beaks, while females exhibit red-purple plumage and black beaks. This breeding success contributes to the conservation of this vibrantly colored parrot species. Zoo officials are optimistic about the future and potential for further breeding programs.
