Despite a significant defeat in April’s national elections, Viktor Orban was re-elected as president of Hungary’s Fidesz party at its 32nd congress in Budapest on June 13th. The congress was intended to signal a period of renewal for the party, however, the outcome largely maintained the status quo. Orban, who recently turned 63, reaffirmed his commitment to continuing his political work, stating he would “never surrender.” Of the 737 party delegates present, 729 voted to reinstate Orban as leader. This result demonstrates Orban’s continued strong support within the party despite the recent electoral setback. The re-election suggests limited internal challenge to Orban’s authority within Fidesz.
