The Norwegian government is doubling its financial support for Oslofjord fishermen, increasing aid to a total of 30 million kroner. This increase, agreed upon during revisions to the national budget, aims to assist fishermen impacted by newly implemented “zero-fishing zones” in the Oslofjord. These zones were established on January 1st with the goal of bolstering fish populations and restoring the fjord’s ecosystem. Fisheries and Ocean Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss stated the funding will enable support for more fishermen who have lost access to traditional fishing grounds. The support package focuses on facilitating a transition for affected fishermen, acknowledging the disruption caused by the conservation efforts. The new support system is expected to be operational by the end of August, providing crucial assistance during this period of change.
