Norway’s Minister of Health and Care Services, Jan Christian Vestre, announced a new goal to reduce hospital wait times to a maximum of 60 days. Currently, the average wait time for hospital treatment is five months. The initiative, unveiled alongside Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at Akershus University Hospital, focuses on improving patient choice and transparency. Patients will have easier access to information regarding wait times at different hospitals through a platform called “My Hospital Choice.” This builds upon the 2001 “Free Hospital Choice” patient right established by the Labour Party. The government aims to implement an updated version of this policy by 2026, streamlining access to healthcare services nationwide. The goal is to empower patients to select hospitals with shorter waiting lists and better manage their appointments.
