The Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has reported nine new cases of West Nile virus since last Thursday. This brings the total number of reported cases in the Netherlands this year to eighteen. Tragically, the death toll has risen to three, an increase from one reported death last week. One of the patients was found to be infected during scientific research conducted by Sanquin Research. The remaining individuals were diagnosed with the virus after being admitted to the hospital with symptoms. The RIVM continues to monitor the situation and investigate the source of the infections within the Netherlands. These recent developments highlight the ongoing public health concern regarding West Nile virus.
