Nigeria has initiated an emergency repatriation operation to bring its citizens home from South Africa, following a surge in xenophobic attacks. The first group of 268 Nigerians arrived home Wednesday, with at least 1,094 more seeking to return. The Nigerian Foreign Ministry confirmed the ambassador to Pretoria, Alexander Ajayi, accompanied the initial group. Repatriation efforts were prompted by ongoing violence targeting foreign nationals, and the registration process for those wishing to leave has been extended to Sunday due to high demand. South Africa has a recurring problem with xenophobia, frequently resulting in violent protests, particularly in vulnerable communities. Mozambique has also been affected, with 600 citizens already repatriated. The Nigerian government is prioritizing the safety and voluntary return of its citizens amid the escalating tensions.
