A military mutiny has broken out in Niger’s capital, Niamey, with gunfire reported near the airport and presidential palace. Initial reports indicate mutineers attempted to infiltrate the presidential palace and are holding officers hostage at the airport, which also houses an air force base. The unrest began overnight with witnesses reporting shots and explosions. A major road leading to Niamey has been blocked, and citizens have been advised to remain calm and shelter in place. This follows a 2023 coup where the military seized power, citing dissatisfaction with the handling of jihadist groups, but struggles with extremist violence continue, particularly from al-Qaida and IS-affiliated groups who have repeatedly targeted the Niamey airport.
