The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) held its annual sale of decommissioned subway materials last week, attracting around 4,000 enthusiasts. Items available included station signs from locations like Harlem, Uptown, and 42nd street, as well as grab holds and even entire train seats—priced up to $1000 for a three-seater. Iconic signage commanded higher prices, ranging from $500 to over $1000 depending on size, material, and the significance of the location depicted, such as Yankee Stadium or Times Square. Despite the costs, dedicated fans were eager to own a piece of New York City transit history, with some queuing overnight at a vacant lot under a railway line in Brooklyn. The MTA collects these items throughout the year during train refurbishments and station renovations. The sales, which began in 2021, have become increasingly popular, now utilizing timed entry to manage the crowds. Collectors like Joseph Ciambra and Austin Celestin expressed joy at acquiring mementos from cherished locations within the city.
