A new species of lizard, *Liolaemus archipensis*, has been discovered in the Andean region of Arequipa, Peru. The lizard, measuring six to eight centimetres, exhibits distinct colouration based on sex, with females displaying square spots and males featuring oblique spots and white scales for camouflage. Scientists report the lizard’s diet consists of plants and small arthropods like spiders and beetles. This discovery brings the total number of lizard species identified in Peru to 296, highlighting the country’s rich biodiversity. The finding was published in the Swiss journal *Diversity*, following research led by biologist Ling Huamani-Valderrama. This adds to a recent surge of discoveries in Peru, including 27 new species found in the Amazon in 2022, and an ancient dolphin fossil unearthed in the Ocucaje Desert.
