The new headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was officially inaugurated in Abuja, Nigeria, marking a significant milestone for regional integration in West Africa. Constructed by the Chinese construction group SCEGC, the modern complex consolidates ECOWAS’ administrative, parliamentary, and judicial institutions to enhance operational efficiency. Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who chairs the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, praised the collective effort behind the project, predicting it will bolster the organization’s institutional capabilities. ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray acknowledged the long-held aspiration for the headquarters and lauded China’s ongoing support for West Africa, extending beyond infrastructure to broader development cooperation. China’s ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, hailed the headquarters as a key achievement in Sino-African cooperation. The complex features a central administrative tower, conference center, and supporting facilities like a daycare and clinic.
