The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Utebzi, a new antibiotic designed to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). This approval marks a significant development as it offers a new option for combating infections increasingly resistant to existing treatments. Utebzi, containing the active ingredient fosfomycin trometamol, is administered as a single dose powder for oral solution. The FDA granted Utebzi priority review, recognizing the urgent need for new UTI therapies. Clinical trials demonstrated Utebzi’s non-inferiority to existing treatments, with a similar success rate in resolving infection symptoms. The antibiotic is intended for adults with uncomplicated UTIs, not for pyelonephritis or complicated infections. Availability of Utebzi is expected soon, providing physicians and patients with another tool in the fight against UTIs.
