The Netherlands is establishing a national research and innovation center dedicated to Long Covid and other post-acute infection syndromes due to the depletion of government funding for related research. The existing 40 million euro budget has been spent, and no new funds have been allocated, threatening to divert researchers back to previous fields and stall treatment development. The Long Covid Foundation is initially funding seven researchers across multiple university medical centers to prevent knowledge loss and accelerate the path to targeted therapies. Currently, there are no effective treatments for Long Covid, impacting an estimated 400,000-450,000 Dutch citizens, with 90,000-100,000 severely affected. The center will focus on identifying distinct patient groups with differing biological mechanisms to tailor treatments accordingly, and potentially broaden insights to conditions like ME/CVS. The aim is to translate scientific findings into concrete treatments faster and address the diverse range of symptoms experienced by Long Covid patients.
