The Netherlands has introduced a discounted train ticket, dubbed the “Netherlands Ticket,” offering unlimited travel for €49 per month during off-peak and weekend hours. Inspired by Germany’s “Deutschlandticket,” the initiative aims to encourage train travel, particularly as an alternative to driving, amid high fuel prices. The ticket, equivalent to the “flex dal vrij” subscription normally costing almost €128 monthly, is valid until September 1st and applies to all regional and NS train operators, excluding international services like Eurostar and ICE. Off-peak hours are defined as before 6:30 AM, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and after 6:30 PM on weekdays, with full weekend coverage. The scheme originated from a parliamentary proposal and seeks to increase public transport usage and appreciation. However, some criticism exists, noting the limited benefit for commuters during peak work hours.
