The Netherlands experienced an unusually intense lightning storm over the weekend, with the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) recording over 300,000 lightning strikes between Saturday 2:00 AM and Sunday 2:00 AM. The final count is expected to be even higher as data from after 2:00 AM Sunday is still being compiled. Such high numbers of lightning strikes are rare, occurring only a few times in recent years; last Saturday saw 188,000 strikes. Two significant storm systems moved across the country, causing widespread disruption. Events including the Concert at Sea festival, Belgian festivals, and a Lil Kleine concert were halted, and attendees at the TT race in Assen sought shelter. Severe weather, including five-centimeter hail near Hilversum and strong winds in Eindhoven and Amsterdam, also caused damage and localized flooding, with multiple fires reported, likely sparked by lightning. A supercell thunderstorm, the most severe type, is believed to have formed over the western part of the country.
