The tax on wealth, known as “box 3” in the Netherlands, is set to be a central topic during the upcoming General Financial Review. The issue stems from a 2021 ruling by the Supreme Court which deemed the tax calculation method unfair, particularly for savers. Currently, approximately 2.5 million people in the Netherlands pay tax in box 3 on returns from savings, stocks, cryptocurrencies, and second homes. The current temporary system implemented after the ruling results in lower tax payments for those with high returns, costing the national treasury 3 billion euros annually. Successive governments - Rutte IV, Schoof, and Jetten – have been working on alternative solutions to address this shortfall. The key question is whether a lasting solution can be agreed upon to end this long-standing political issue and ensure a fairer taxation system.
