The Netherlands will implement its National Heat Plan starting tomorrow due to forecasted high temperatures. The decision, made by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in consultation with the KNMI weather institute, comes as temperatures are expected to exceed 27 degrees Celsius for four consecutive days, peaking above 30 degrees Celsius on Friday. The plan activates a nationwide alert, extending beyond notifications to healthcare organizations to include a call for general public vigilance regarding vulnerable individuals. These groups include the elderly, children, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, the homeless, and people with obesity, who are at higher risk of heat-related health issues like dehydration and heatstroke. The RIVM advises vulnerable people to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during peak heat, and take measures like closing curtains and using fans. Citizens are urged to be aware of symptoms of overheating, such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue. The duration of the heat plan remains unspecified.
