Nepal’s state-run food company is forgoing goat sales this Dashain festival, citing consistent financial losses and ongoing transportation challenges as making the trade too risky. The decision marks a departure from previous years where the company played a role in supplying goats for the important festival. Simultaneously, the company is implementing measures to support sugar access, selling it at Rs16 per kilogram below current market prices. To increase availability, the purchase limit for individual customers has been raised to 25 kilograms. These actions suggest a shift in the company’s focus toward stabilizing essential commodity prices during the festival season. This move aims to ensure broader accessibility of sugar for Nepali consumers ahead of Dashain. The decision highlights the logistical and economic pressures faced by state-run enterprises in Nepal.
